    Arizona Women Lawyers Association

The Arizona Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) is a professional organization committed to supporting the success of women lawyers throughout the state of Arizona. Founded in 1975 by a group of trailblazing attorneys, the AWLA was established to form an organization to address the gender bias and underrepresentation of women in the legal field. From its inception, the association has focused on advocating for women in law and creating a supportive professional community that focuses on the unique issues faced by women who practice law in Arizona.

During the 1980s, the AWLA began expanding its efforts to include advocacy for gender equity within the legal profession. The organization played an increasingly active role in promoting policies that support women lawyers and raise awareness about systemic challenges within the legal system.

In the 1990s, the AWLA launched impactful mentorship programs that paired experienced attorneys with newer members, fostering collegiality, professional growth, and long-term success. These years also marked a growth in the organization’s community service efforts, with initiatives that benefited both women and families throughout Arizona.

By the 2000s, the AWLA broadened its focus to include diversity, equity, and inclusion not only for women, but also for other underrepresented groups in the legal field. Membership is open to individuals of all genders who support the AWLA’s mission, reflecting the organization’s commitment to inclusive progress.

Today, the AWLA continues to promote and encourage the success of women lawyers across Arizona. It provides its members with vital information, resources, and support; fosters meaningful professional connections; and actively celebrates the accomplishments of its members. The AWLA is a strong voice within Arizona’s legal community and a key player in shaping a more equitable profession.

The association’s statewide programs and operations are guided by its Board of Directors, while its local programs are coordinated by the Steering Committees of its four regional chapters. This structure allows the AWLA to maintain a strong statewide presence while also addressing the unique needs of local communities.

With a rich history and a forward-looking mission, the AWLA remains a powerful advocate for women in law and a central force for mentorship, networking, and professional development in Arizona’s legal landscape.
