Los Abogados Hispanic Bar Association
Los Abogados is Arizona’s Hispanic Bar Association. “The mission of Los Abogados is to develop, empower, and support the Latino community through the advancement of the legal profession” by promoting diversity, education, and advocacy within the state’s Hispanic legal community. Los Abogados was originally founded in 1976, by a group of individuals who intended to develop an informal professional support system where Hispanic attorneys could network and socialize. Los Abogados was later formally incorporated in 1988.
It is the commitment of Los Abogados to provide its members with a means of professional and personal development. Since the organization’s founding and incorporation, Los Abogados has provided a family atmosphere that supports the growth and unity of the Latino legal community in Arizona, which includes not only judges, licensed attorneys, and law students, but also, undergraduate college students and high school students who have an interest in law—all of whom may become members of the organization.
A major focus of Los Abogados is investing in the next generation of the Latino legal community. As part of their commitment to education and empowerment, Los Abogados established the Valdemar Cordova Scholarships in honor of Arizona's first Latino federal judge. The Scholarships are awarded at both of Arizona’s public laws schools, Arizona State University's Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law and the University of Arizona's James E. Rogers College of Law.
In addition, Los Abogados has developed a mentorship program and the Professor Calleros Pipeline Fellowship Program. The mentorship program connects Latino law students with established, experienced attorneys for support and guidance. In 2006, Los Abogados, in conjunction with the Hispanic National Bar Association and Chicano/Latino Law Students Association at Arizona State University's College of Law, launch a 4-tiered mentorship program to develop mentor/mentee relationships between high school students, college students, law students, and attorneys.
The Professor Calleros Pipeline Fellowship Program offers free LSAT preparation for individuals that aspire to go to law school. Every year since 2017, ten aspiring law students are selected as fellows and are given the opportunity to participate in an LSAT prep course while also developing a relationship with an attorney mentor. In 2025, the number of students selected increased to twenty. This “program boasts a history of success, with fellows achieving notable improvements in LSAT scores and admissions to prestigious law schools.”
