Arizona Attorney Magazine wins national award for Vietnam anniversary coverage
PHOENIX – Nov. 8, 2023 – The State Bar of Arizona’s flagship publication Arizona Attorney Magazine has earned the 2023 Luminary Award for Excellence in Special Projects from the National Association of Bar Professionals, an affiliate of the American Bar Association. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in communications.
The March 2023 issue of the magazine told the compelling stories of Arizona attorneys who served in the Vietnam War. Published on the 50th anniversary of the final withdrawal of U.S. service members, the special edition took nearly eight months to plan. “Brothers in Arms” shared the narratives of 34 Arizona veterans who answered the call to serve during a conflict that divided a nation.
“Being recognized for our work was an honor,” said Arizona Attorney Magazine Editor Tim Eigo. “But the deeper honor lies in the privilege of sharing these veterans’ stories. Fifty years ago, these attorneys were in their teens or barely out of them. We owe a debt of gratitude both to those service members and to our author Jim Marlar, who treated every man’s story as the treasured memory that it is.”
In addition to the work of the author and the editor, the final result recognizes the achievement of Art Director Karen Holub, who managed a large volume of content, located and secured National Archives photos, and successfully designed it all into a moving narrative.
This edition yielded more letters to the editor than any content has in decades. Competition judges called the edition a phenomenal achievement that is a high-water mark in storytelling for bar publications.
“This recognition is a real source of pride,” said Benjamin Taylor, President, State Bar of Arizona Board of Governors. “The Brothers in Arms special edition boldly honors our members who served. It also stands as a uniquely important journalistic archive of what our members gave to their country. In some cases, it underscores what they lost.”
